New to banjos & inherited a cello banjo, now what?

My grandfather passed recently and left behind several instruments. I was told that I'd be getting a banjo and to my surprise, it's a 4 string cello banjo from gold tone.. I have no idea how to even start learning, as it isn't a super common instrument from what I can tell. Years and years ago I played violin so I do have SOME experience playing music but I haven't played in a very long time.

Any advice? Is it ok to learn on this instrument or should I attempt to get my hands on a more traditional banjo? Where do I even start??

	mike gregory says: 4/27/2015 4:35:21 AM Look at as many Mary Z. Cox cello banjo videos as you can find. And any kind of music MAY be played on any instrument. The MAIN reason to get a "more traditional" banjo would be to "fit in" with people who are too narrow-minded to accept the sight of a cello banjo at the jam. Best advice I ever got (from Milwaukee-area banjo expert Ken Haferman) "Kid, it's YOUR banjo. Play it any damn' way you want!"
	rmcdow says: 7/12/2015 10:41:47 AM I have a 5 string fretless CEB-5 from Goldtone, and it is fast becoming my favorite banjo. The deep tones it resonates are just great, and since it is tuned just like a traditional banjo, only an octave lower, anything you learn on it will be transferrable to a regular banjo, should you catch a case of banjo acquisition syndrome.
