I've been to plenty of the BG kind, now I'm thinking I'd like to get more serious about learning this style. If anyone has a recommendation, I'd love to know. Also, should I find a good one within a reasonable distance, could I get by with my 5-string, or would I be compelled to invest in an Irish Tenor banjo? Thanks.

See also Tom Hanway's books (Mel Bay publications) along with some tabs and MP3s as examples that you'll find on his BHO homepage. I suggest you try to find some local Celtic sessions so that you can immerse yourself in the music.
	KidfromDeliverance says: 4/4/2013 2:14:32 PM I am familiar with Tom's books; I live in a pretty rural area, so there really are no local Celtic sessions I can attend. Hence, the inquiry into music camps.
	captbanjo says: 4/7/2013 8:56:19 AM I highly recommend Swannaboa Gathering in Ashville, NC. They have an amazing amount of classes available for the study of Celtic music on various instruments. You can find them on the internet with a quick search. As for learning the style on a banjo, to my knowledge there has never been a class taught using five string in the Celtic repertoire at this school. In fact, I can't recall ever seeing cultic music on a five string banjo being taught at a camp or workshop. Maybe this is something one of the teachers in that istle can do if there is demand One other option I can suggest is, if you are already a five string banjo player, you can learn to use the four string Irish tenor played in a similar style with the right hand. Many left-hand techniques will also be available to utilize.
	KidfromDeliverance says: 4/7/2013 2:35:06 PM That is a possibility; it means investing in another instrument, and a bit more travel, but I'm willing to consider it. I was at a workshop at the Longford festival, where I learned just a bit of four-string technique, and it didn't seem too different. Also, Asheville is a great place to visit! Thanks for the suggestion.
	KidfromDeliverance says: 4/11/2013 11:15:45 AM Just took a look at the Asheville Gathering; looks pretty good, though getting there would be expensive for me (plus it overlaps the Americana Festival in Virginia City). So maybe next year for that one. Just discovered another Celtic thing closer by, the Lark in the Morning festival in Mendocino, CA. This one could work for me this year. Anyone been there?
