So one of the most crucial things in clawhammer is grouding the thumb on the strings. If not the 5th string, then the next inner string when you're double thumbing ("drop thumbing"), but when I'm sight-reading tabs, am I supposed to look a little bit ahead to know where to lay my thumb?
