Member Setup survey

From 3fingers on 2/2/2011 8:43:15 AM

One nice thing about having this group is we can use it to see what other people are doing. So I thought we'd start by doing a setup survey.

How many of you have had your banjo professionally setup or paid someone to set it up and what were the results? Was it worth the money to have it done? And would you have it done again?

My 75VL was setup by Charlie Cushman right before I bought it. It has a Killer tone and I would have him do the setup on any banjo I was going to use for shows. I would say it was worth having it done.

Regular 75's seem to sound good with just about any setup. Very forgiving banjos. I guess that's a testament to how good the rings are. I do my own setup work and as long as the basics are covered they sound good. It's mainly a matter of trying out bridges and head tension adjustment after proper neck and tone ring fit are confirmed. Haven't had a bad one yet in four different Crowe equipped banjos. Can't say the same for the other Gibson rings. I have noticed the Blackjacks are a little more inconsistent and don't seem to have the same sound as the regular 75's and I can't explain why.

Tom Mckinney of Ashville NC did my setup. I tracked him down after I found out that he had done JD Crowe's setup. He is the fellow who invented the Mckinney capo. He also told me that he is the one that sold Sonny Osborne his famous banjo. Interesting person.

I set mine up myself like you guys say they are almost foolproof .As far as setup I can't get mine to sound bad no matter how much I mess with it.

I recently purchased a 2009 Gibson RB 75vl from Gruhn guitars and took it to Charlie Cushman to set up. WOW is the only word I can use. He said it was a fine banjo and just needed a little maintenance. He completely took it apart and verified the Crow75 tone ring and was able to clean every part which made it look brand new. Then he worked his magic and the sound is incredible. The BEFORE and AFTER looks and sound was amazing. He resold me on my banjo, He took a good banjo and made it look brand new and sound fantastic. Thanks Charlie. Just one curious note. I noticed it sounded even more incredible when He played it. No doubt I must get in the wood shed and start working harder.

Barry what is the serial number on that one? I have 75 0209 05V. So far mine is the only one I know of that has V stamped in the rim. I'm glad you like it, Charlie does great job with them. There was another BHO member that was interested in that banjo but he passed on it so I never found out what the s/n was.

Sorry 3fingers for taking so long to answer. I guess I don't look at this site enough. My serial number is 75-0209-09
I talked to the other BHO member. He had been told it looked like someone had tried to take the tone ring off with a screwdriver. Charlie said it was a plating mark. The tone ring slips on and off just right.
