JD Crowe RB 75

From jeff stovall on 1/28/2014 6:23:47 AM

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a 2004 Gibson JD Crowe RB 75, and as I posted at that time, I discovered that the banjo had been originally built with a PM tone ring.  It sounded good, but I wanted to find a Crowe ring to install in it for comparison; I had read here the favorable comments concerning these rings, so I felt it would be beneficial to try one.

After posting a 'want to buy' ad here on the Hangout, I was able to purchase one.  I now have it installed in the banjo.  I think the Crowe ring has a little more bass tone overall than the PM ring, and the Crowe ring seems to control 'ringy' overtones more than the PM ring.  I tried several bridges and settled on an older Huber.  It also sounded good with a New Generation Snuffy Smith and a Cat Eyz.  I agree with a lot of you here, the Crowe tone ring is one of the best rings available today.  It has all of the bass you could want, but still has power, volume, and a nice bell-like ring up the neck.  I haven't heard any harsh, metallic tone anywhere along the fingerboard.  Gibson, JD, and Bill Sullivan did an exceptional job on these banjos and the tone ring in particular.

Thanks for all of the help I got from folks here on the Hangout and the Crowe Powered Group.  Your help locating a tone ring and advice concerning the tone rings in general was very helpful.
