Banjo #92

From roguegaston on 2/8/2013 4:18:54 PM

I just talked to Patrick Huff and I am going to be the proud owner of Doc's Banjo #92.  It has a 12" Medrone and Bubinga pot with a Medrone neck and scalloped Oak fret board.  I am super excited to pick it up, with luck, next weekend.  Patrick asked how I would like it set up, but I have no idea.  I am just starting out, so I really don't have an opinion on such things yet.  After talking with him, we are going with lower action, nylgut strings and a renaissance head.  What do you all think?

As an impulse buy, I picked up a Fender Rustler open back, so I will have that as well.  I will either keep it to have something different or sell it off.

I'm stoked,

Jason

Congratulations and welcome to the group. Doc's wood skills are unsurpassed. I looked at the site , but didn't see #92. I've got #169, but changed from Nylgut to steel - personal preference. I found the Minstrel Nylguts too "big" for lack of a better description. Mine has a Doc's dyed hide head which looks and sounds great. I'm sure you will enjoy yours. If you decide to try a skin head, John Balch makes some of the best - premounted.

Hey Thanks! It sounds like #92 had been dissemblance for a while, so it is being brought back to life. I am fairly sure you can see the neck in the video at vimeo.com/channels/banjobuilders/56595356 (2:07), so that's kinda fun.

Congrats on your purchase, when I got mine had no idea on setup, just told Doc what I was doing and he took care of the rest, so you're in good hands. Once again congrats.

I just got an email from Doc and Florisel, my banjo is done and shipping out today. They strung it with GHS phosphor bronze medium gauge strings, but said it can take Nylgut as well. I am also getting one of their buckskin straps and a Cathedral Bridge. I can't wait! I will post pictures once it arrives.

Does anyone have any suggestions for cases that are good, take the 12" pot, and not crazy expensive?

I posted a few quick photos of #92 under my photos.
