Rea

From banjo-kiel on 8/29/2016 2:44:33 PM

As Doc Huff counts his banjos not only by numbers but (his daughter) gives names to every new banjo, my No. 253 is called Rea. Just wanted to share some pics of my (one year old) Rea. She is a 12´´, the red hair comes from Aquila nylgut, Red Series, which I chose as not only fitting by color but also providing a superb sound.

I am the proud owner of Doc's #52 and #75 and didn't know about the naming of them. I had contacted Doc Huff to see if he could give me any info on the woods he used. I purchased both banjos second hand and #75 was built in 2006 according to the label inside.#52 built in 2005. Doc told me that he had gone back to Africa shortly after '06 and had lost all the information regarding instruments built prior to then. #75 has a frailing scoop and I have strung with medium light steel. #52 has no scoop and is strung with older rather heavy classical guitar strings. It sounds so great I hope the strings last forever as I don't know what brand they are. When the time comes it will be trial and error I suspect. The 5th string was steel when I got #52 and was bad so I put nylon on it and it is almost too loud if I am no careful and overdrives the other strings.

I will say that when I have either of my Docs at a banjo festival or a camp people always comment about them and when I allow select people to play one they reluctantly give it back to me. Even had a friend search for some time to find a second hand one. I kicked around several banjos over the last 4 years and wasted a bit of money buying a few I later rejected when I got my first Docs.

Very nice Kiel, didn't know about Doc giving them names though, makes a nice touch apart from being numbered, but then they're all unique. Hope she gives you a lot of pleasure.

she really does - and I like her read hair ;-)
Anyone had Aquila Red Series used for oldtime banjo?

I discovered that his daughter, Natalia, names them. He said that she's been helping him effectively in the shop (though only 12 years old) and does nothing "stupid."
