Enoch Tradesman 12" head question

From Trentvalleybanjo on 12/16/2012 5:37:11 AM

Hi, I have a Tradesman banjo, 12" and really really pleased with it, would just like clarify something which I am not sure is right, when the renaissance head is correctly tensioned the tension hoop sits approximately 1/16" below the rim this causes the no knot tailpiece to touch down on the head / rim, the head is 1/2" in height, is this the correct size ?   if somebody could check the head height on their 12" Tradesman I would be much obliged.

I'm no luthier but that sounds wrong to me. I have a 12" Dobson and it doesn't sit on the head even though I have the Rennaisance fairly tight.

As a side question, I've wondered about putting a frosted head on it. The banjo is naturally dark so I was thinking a frosted head might sound better?

The Tradesman is set up so that the tension hoop usually is flush with the head but not all REMO heads are equal and some have a bit more crown that others. There's an easy solution if you want the tension hoop to set higher and if your concerned that the tail piece will cut into the head. You can put a high crown 11-15/16" head on and it will cause the tension hoop to set higher. The Tradesman rims are actually slightly less that 12" in diameter so that head will fit. Hope this solves the problem.
As for a frosted head on a Dobson model, well that's the great thing about banjos. You can always try it and if you don't like it go back to what you had to begin with. No harm in trying.

Thanks for that, exactly the information I was after.

Well, it came from the guy who made our banjos so I'm guessing it's the correct info.

My Rens stretched on my Tradesman (which I've had for about 4 years) and the hoop's down about as far as I'm happy to take it. Just ordered a replacement. Thanks to Kevin for a speedy reply to an email I sent to him on the subject. The heads aren't expensive and I love the tone they produce and so I'm not bothered if I have to replace in another 4 years,

New 12" medium crown ren head fitted and the Tradesmans back to normal. I think the old head had become more elastic with age,the crown on the old one looks about twice that of the new

Kevin is usually prompt and precise even if your question is a trival one that you should have figured out yourself. I know, LOL.
