Skin head for a tradesman?

From writerrad on 1/23/2013 10:09:43 AM

I've already queried this with Kevin and got his precise information but I have been considering putting a skin head on my tradesman because I love skin heads.

Funny I bought the tradesman precisely because all the banjos I had then had skin heads and I had taken them to a festival where it rained and I was staying in a tent and .  .  . well just lucky I also brought a guitar and was more of  aguitar player than banjoist at the time.

I am not looking for "how to" infomation.  I know a couple excellent luthiers who I will have do this if I decide to do this.  I am a pretty good banjoist but am otherwise a disaster as a mechanic!

Just to be clear, I am looking for playing information and what to watch out for by folk who have done this or tried this or a reason NOT to do so from someone who has thought about it and not done it.

Tony,

I believe you may have answered your own query. My Tradesman is the only banjer that I own that does not have a skin head installed ... for the very reason you have mentioned. I have a friend who has succumbed to the temptation and is is pleased, as the resultant combination sounds and look great.

Good luck with your decision.

I put a vellum calf-skin on my 1/2 fretless tradesman, and it's working out quite well. I bought the skin and a flesh hoop from Bill Miller's site (banjoseen.us). The vellum calf skin is a bit bright, and if I were to do it again I might use a goat skin, but the sound is terrific and it's quite loud.

I'm now experimenting with the aquila nylgut red strings - Jury is still out there, but again the combination is much louder than I would have expected

I posted this in 2013. About that time I had a calf-skin head put onto it which is funny since I got the tradesman to have a non skin headed banjo here in the sub tropics of florida where we often play outside and every jam site seems to be near at least one, sometimes 2 bodies of water. I loved the sound of the banjo with the Calfskin. I just had a Balch goatskin put on it a few months ago. The head takes a bit lkonger to stretch out and be comfortable but it has a brighter snappier tone than the calfskin. Skin heads require more care (especially in S Fl) but to me it is not only the sound but the physical feeling of the head that makes a difference. It is a personal decision.
