2.7 gram Bridge

From MightyMOBanjo on 9/11/2012 2:16:15 PM

Well, I finally got my Prowler Spice Bridge from Katz Eye, and all I can say is WOW WOW WOW!!!  It gave me the tone and growl that I have been searching for.  I am almost to that Earl sound, will have to think long and hard before I do anymore to it.  But I am thinkin, always tryin to get that perfect sound out of a $500 banjo, and I KNOW that it can be done.

Cool, congratultions! Sounds like you're on the verge of striking the gold mine. I'm pretty content with my setup right now...D'Addario lights, Steve Davis bridge, all else original. I decided to quit tinkering & just play the darn thing as I think the sound will get better as I get better. I did tighten my head considerably using the Steve Davis coin/straight edge method. Found I liked it best when a dime would barely fit, but latelty my ear is telling me there's too much sustain. If I back off the tension a little at a time, will this tame it a bit?

I have my head set at 90 via a drum dial, a Fults 34 parallel tail piece, and use GHS Almost Medium strings. And a Katz Eye McCormick Spice 2.7 gram bridge. I am now considering a black head, because I have read that it is suppose to give more of a skin head sound (plus I think that they look cool). Plus I am also considering a Tennessee 20 tone ring, and a Pass rim. However I will do these thing piece by piece until I reach the sound I want.

I like GHS Medium strings on my 40+ year old Epi. It has no serial number, and the head is over 30 years old, but it still sounds good. A black head is an intriguing idea.
