As a team, the Kruger Brothers have a creative talent that I believe is missing in much of modern folk, country, and rock music. Let me illustrate it this way with the first movement in the Appalachian Concerto, "Morning At Deep Gap". For anyone who has seen a sunrise in the mountains, with fog in the lowlands, giving way as the sun pops over the mountain and rises in the sky, their music paints a beautiful picture of this sequence in the mind of the listener. Each instrument, bass, guitar, and banjo, is like a paint brush, adding shapes and hues. Similarly, "Wild Horses" paints a vivid picture of horses running, through the forest, across the prairie, or down the beach. "As Far As The Eye Can See" captures musically my favorite view near Clingman's Dome, looking east for 75-100 miles on a clear day.
Jens said recently:" In classical music, virtuosity is essential, but in folk music, it is optional." That gives hope to me and a lot of other bass, guitar, and banjo players. However, each of these gentlemen are "virtuosos" in the truest sense of the word.
And, as someone else commented, they are nice people, fun to be around.
