Fender Leo Owners now have a spot at BHO!

From Ric in Richmond on 3/24/2014 3:57:51 AM

I figured I would start a spot here on BHO to talk about the Fender LEO and its variations.

The Leo's were made from the late 70's to the mid 80's in Japan to Fenders specs.

I am a big fan of them and think they are a sweet combination of price and performance.

I am not an expert by any means on them and would like this spot to become a resource for fans of these instruments.

If you have one post up a photo or two, some info about when you got it,  how long you have owned it, what modifications you have done to it, a serial number or even a video/ audio clip.

I purchased my basic Leo in 1978 in a local music store to replace my beginner Kay type banjo that I learned on during my young teens.
My Leo Serial #5063 with dark wood mahogany stain has seen a new bone nut to correct the string spacing problem, D tuners for that Scruggs sound, a clam shell type tailpiece for quick string changes during concert use, a renaissance head, 5th string capo for quick key changes, a compensated bridge to correct intonation and just a year ago I replaced the first 3 frets because of wear. All the work I did myself including taking it all apart twice over the years, to clean up the gunk that seems to collect in the grooves.
Also adjusted the neck angle once or twice over that time and loved and played it, for 36 years. Never had any playability or fit or finish issues, other than the original nut spacing, and I prefer a bone one anyway.
During that time I have played it in several bands, taken it to camp, performed many concerts indoor and out. Present band mate knocked it off the stand on to the floor and other than another chip, it played ok.
Has a clear loud bell type ring to it, yeah heavy but funny how I never felt like I needed another different banjo. Will post a picture or two and maybe a video or audio clip soon.
