Crash

From Slick Salmon on 11/20/2012 11:00:38 AM

I'm having a repeated problem.  The program is crashing my computer whenever I try to change the tempo using the tempo slider.  Is anyone else experiencing this?

I never do that, but I tried it on one song after seeing your post and had no problem.

I scanned the web, and this problem has been reported by others but without resolution. If I can't find a solution, I'll have to abandon GarageBand for lack of stability. I can't have it crash my computer all the time; I'll have to find another recording program.

Try repairing disk permissions using disk utility application. Sometimes that works when software acts up.

OK, thanks. I'll give that a try.

Don't know why I didn't think of this one earlier: I mention it in my post about GB wiping out data. Close GB. Click on your user account name in Finder, then go to Library> Preferences. In the Preferences folder, find the file "com.apple.garageband.plist" - send that to Trash.

When you start GB any settings like audio input/output sources will be gone and you'll have to set them again.

For one last ditch try, I'd start with piwo1960's suggestion, then reinstall GB, and finally the above. If that doesn't cure it, it's something really obscure and you'll probably want to move on.

There are two others: com.apple.garageband.cs and com.apple garageband.LSSharedFileList.plist. Do I keep those?

Yes, leave those.

Sorry, guys, no luck. I made all the changes, and the system crashed again. I gotta move on to something more stable. I downloaded an evaluation copy of Reaper, but it looks about a thousand times more complicated than I need. Maybe Audacity will be enough. I'll miss all the loops and plug-ins, though.

I don't know about loops, but Audacity should work with a lot of plugins. Actually I think my copy of Audacity lists all the GB effects in the Effects menu. You can get third party plugins - I think VST as well as Apple-type plugins will work.

Bizarre problem you ran into there. It's a shame really.
