Just bought Liberty / Gariepy on Marketplace

From Shmockiebaby on 8/12/2019 5:42:53 PM

Greetings all, and thanks for having me in this small, exclusive group.

I just purchased a banjo here in the hangout marketplace that has a mix of a Liberty pot and a Gariepy neck.  Just paid for it, don’t have it yet.

Seller tells me the neck is straight and true, but I’m curious about what has kept it that way?  Good woodworking and wood selection?  Or is there a rod or tube in the necks?

Does anyone here know if the Gariepy necks have any additional reinforcement?  This one is a 5 piece neck, looks to be mahogany.

Thanks!

I don't know if there's any metal in the neck ir not. But mine has stayed straight for 50+ years. Those six pieces of wood (including the fingerboard) glued together made a stiff, warp-resistant neck.

I believe the necks do have a reinforcing rod. The access is usually through a small silver cover among the lower frets on the neck. I'll try to post a picture of mine.

You can barely make out the rod cover on the lower fingerboard in the picture I posted a couple years ago of a Gariepy Style I here on the group site (bottom right).

I'll try to add a better picture of the reinforcing rod access port on the fretboard under "Linked Content" on the right.

BTW, Liberty banjos generally don't have a metal tone ring, and Gariepy did produce a model called "Liberty." Check your pot for serial numbers. What kinds of inlay does it have?
