hi all, I'm new to this forum but wanted to say hi. I have an '08 model and I've got to the point where I was liking the maple sound of my ESS better. I didn't want to sell the BJ so ended up putting a Dannick no-hole ring in it to see what it would do and it came alive. Think I plan to keep it this way.

I'm not looking for a debate. All the components contribute to the sound - good or bad. My goal was to be able to pick it and enjoy playing it again. To me it's still says Gibson on the peg head and blackjack on the block. I've just made it better with a new ring.

Glad you like the new ring! Did you have the Crowe ring or one of the other gibson rings in the banjo originally? Was the fit to the rim the same on both rings?
The blackjack is a great banjo, but I admit I go through spells when I prefer my Scruggs as well.

The fit was very tight when I got the blackjack with the Crowe ring so I sent the rim and ring to mr blaylock (of blaylock tone rings) and he cut it correctly. I found the Dannick rings fit was more lose than Crowe - truly a slip fit

Is the v necks fretboard narrower than conventional necks? And does the fret positions seem narrower up the neck when compared to ESS.

The fretboard width seems the same to me when compared to my Scruggs. I really like the thinner v neck.
I wonder how the Crowe ring would sound with a slip fit compared to your dannick?
Can you describe the differences in town between the two?

When I got the blackjack, I took it apart and this is when I noticed the ring being very tight. Next step was sending it to blaylock for him to turn the rim to fit the crow ring. It was a slip fit when I got it back. I didn't have any experience with other mahogany so took it to Charlie Cushman who did a setup. It made it sound good but I just kept comparing it to maple and it didn't have the tone i was wanting. So I saw the Dannick ring in the classifieds and bought it. It fit even more loose than the Crowe did but I let Cush set it up again and it has power and rings all the way up the neck. Head tap tunes to a#if memory serves. I took it to a jam tonight and it definitely turned dheads. Could have been me missing too many notes. My thumb seems to have gone on vacationt
