String choice question for a ESS

From Ragtimejoe on 5/20/2014 4:14:01 PM

I just got a ESS. I've been playing mahogany banjos since I started playing about 1.5 years ago. I've pretty much settled in in PF155 strings (10,11,12.5,20,10).

What are other folks using for their Earl Scruggs banjos. Do maple banjos require heavier strings to drive them?

Thanks for any advice.

Joe

I have an RB4, which is walnut, but I have found that the PF150 strings give me the sound I'm looking for.

And it is early. I meant the PF140, JD Crowe Studio set.

PF 140 lights for me as well on my Earl Scruggs Standard...played medium light before that...a little getting use to the lighter ones...great harmonics though

I agree with fish carver. PF140 JD Crowe studio set. They also come in a performance set with .10 on the outside instead of 9.5. They are the most popular strings out there. Very playable with a great sound. Try the light studio set and you will be very happy. They also keep their tone better than any other string I've found and the great part is they're inexpensive too.
