I played my 1975 GTR Hearts & Flowers banjo to death in my late teens and early twenties. I think I was 18 when I got it. It was a huge improvement over the Harmony I had been playing. It really sounded good. A great intermediate banjo. John Hartford had one just like it which he used as a "low banjo" tuned down to E.

I find that the general consensus among musicians, who have played GTRs, and those who have played along with GTR players, is that for a Japanese MASTERTONE clone, the GTRs are a standout product. I payed $650 for my brand new one in1975, and it was instrumental - pun intended - in launching my playing into a level where a yet better banjo could actually make me a better player. That's when I had Dale London build the bluegrass banjo I play now. Which in '78, Was an $1,800 instrument. The GTR really ramped up my playing ability to where I needed to jump to a very high quality banjo to continue to improve as a player. I do remember everyone - myself included - being very impressed by its volume and tone.
