Good morning, I have a custom Hatfield that Arthur built for me and of course I love it. It is mahogany. I also have an '94 RB-4 and I switch between the 2 for my gigs. To my ear, the tone and volume of the Hatfield is far superior, however my Gibson's neck feels better and is faster for me. I have relatively small hands and the RB-4 neck profile is slightly smaller. Of course, had I known at the time, Arthur could have built any profile I specified, but it never occurred to me. Giving my Hatfield a speed neck has been suggested to help, and I think it might. Aesthetically, speed necks are OK, but have never been preferred by me all that much. My question for the group is: do any of you have a speed neck on your mahogany Hatfield, do you see/feel a great difference, and is the softer mahogany more susceptible to moisture absorption, and change, without the protection of a lacquer finish ?
