I created this group for fans of Hayes Shepherd to share information and ask questions about "The Appalachia Vagabond"
Hayes Shepherd was born Apr. 15, 1895 in Kentucky. He died May 27, 1952 .
On Friday, March 28, 1930 Hayes recorded two songs in Knoxville, TN, "Hard For To Love" and "Peddler And His Wife" they were issued on Vocalion 5450. A recording he made on Saturday, October 5, 1929 in Richmond, IN ("Mine Own Time Troubles") was never issued.
Hayes Shepherd played in a two finger index lead style with picks on a Gibson Mastertone banjo.
Hayes Shepherd is believed to have played banjo on one (unidentified) side of Champion S-16383 ("Bound Steel Blues" and "Aunt Jane Blues") which was recorded by his brother Bill Shepherd (fiddle). His other brother, Hence Shepherd played banjo on the other side.
