Black Cherry Blossom #'s 001 & 002!

From Helix on 11/25/2011 5:21:00 AM

ltjgcag sent me some Black Cherry planks. This is rare, old and difficult to get.  I made 2 rims and two necks.

I often times use a knock note for the customer on the phone with like 7 rims on my arm, each with a different tone and note.

I had a visitor the other day whom I got walking around and knocking different rims.

He finally chose the Black Cherry #002, so, soon, there will be two of these things.

The #001 has both neck and rim made from Black Cherry, with inlays supplied by Andy dePaule.  Very nice.  Northwoods rule. Slow growth just like us Americans.

A chance conversation on the golf course led me to HeliX........I'm the guy getting HeliX Black Cherry #2. Part of the fun is watching Larry work and seeing the progress. I find Larry to be a unique mix of artist, craftsman and character. (Also he lets me hang out in his workshop). I appreciate people who think 'out of the box'...

I did knock on more than a few rims before
selecting Black Cherry.....

now I just need to learn how to play it!

And I just visited the stump of that Black Cherry tree a couple of weeks ago. Made a good place to sit on for a rest when I was up deer hunting!

Linked a photo of some of the Black Cherry slabs that were once upon a time growing atop the stump I rested on!

ltjgcag,

two questions, where was this stump? and did you get your deer?
thanks for the photo.
Larry estimated this wood to be 80+ yrs old.

80+, doesn't that qualify it as a pre-war? It has that long lost pre-war Helix sound I bet:)

Trouble was, long lost wasn't too far off base, really shook things up, let 'em grab YOUR banjo in the middle of a solo.

Put the banjo on the ground, step away from the banjo.

Oh, you mean me? I'm 80+ last night in my dreams. We're too young not to have fun with Helix.

fixj -
Stump is located on my slice of heaven in Michigan's upper peninsula (Da Yoop) near Newberry, Michigan.
Got a nice buck with a crossbow this year before rifle season opened.
And yes, the tree was at least 80 years old, as far as I could count the annular rings. Most likely in the 90-100 range, as Black Cherry is a first growth tree and the property was timbered of the white pine around 1900-1910. There are still a few white pine stumps left rom tress that were 5 feet in diameter.

I'm sure there might be others interested in the logging process for this tree. How did you get those slabs?

Black Cherry Blossom #002 went home from Helix on the back of a golf cart.

Hopefully your golf cart! Enjoy.

add 9 grandchildren and fly fishing for a 'balanced' life.
can't keep my hands off BCB002.
en route to Seattle to show it off to my family and friends....Alaska Airlines took one look at it and upgraded me to first class.

Out of fear that you would play it? :) When you set it down long enough you'll have to show us pictures.

it's getting to be a trend.....flying to AZ today with BCB#002....suddenly I am in 2D....paid for 15 F.....
the secret to airline upgrades might be to carry a gig bag...
