I would be interested in any thoughts or experiences that you may have had with Gold Tone pre-mounted calf skin heads. They are advertised on the Janet Davis web site.

I have not had good luck with Bill Miller pre-mounts, and would prefer a pre-mount over doing the mounting myself.

	jbalch says: 1/22/2012 5:14:45 PM I've used Gold Tone pre-mounted heads before. On some banjos they are just fine. I installed one on a Wildwood minstrel banjo with very good results. I briefly had one on my Bart Reiter Bacophone-Plus (now has self-mounted calfskin). I linked a sound sample of "Year of Jubolo" on the Reiter. It was recorded when that banjo was set up with a Gold Tone skin head. The issue you might have is that the aluminum hoop is larger than a traditional flesh hoop (and even larger than some mylar heads). It will fit on many modern banjos (made for mylar heads). But it is too large to fit under the tension hooks and in the neck notch on some banjos (especially vintage instruments). The hides Gold Tone uses are high quality bleached calfskin. The one's I've seen were fairly thick and appear to be nice skins. Bottom line: if a Gold Tone head will fit your banjo ... I say go for it.
