Miller heads crown height

From tridentum on 3/22/2012 4:38:58 AM

I'm making the switch back to hide on my 12 inch with a WL ring. Ordered a Miller head, white calfskin. I'm a tad concerned about the crown height. What's the best way to coax it down of it's a tough fit initially? Simply dampen it a bit with a towel?

I might add that the head hasn't arrived yet. Just anticipating the issue.

Hi tridentum, you might have problems with the Bill Miller skin. The last I heard was that Bill was very ill and might not survive. I noted this and ordered a calfskin from StewMac. It's very sad because Bill was a great guy to deal with and could supply various types of hide heads, brass flesh hoops, and or premounted skins. As for fitting, I was shown a very straightforward way of doing the job, and hopefully I can find a copy of these instructions which I could send you. Otherwise you can find fitting instructions on youtube, but don't do it the way Gold Tone tell you. They have a strange method which wouldn't work for me.

I don't know details about Bill's current circumstances. I do know He has battled a medical problem for a long time. Also, I did hear that Bill's daughter has been filling orders. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill for sure....

I trust you will recieve the head. When it arrives, the head will probably fit well. But ...if you need to stretch it to raise the crown height, usually a little added moisture will help. Just moisten with a damp cloth and tighen the hooks slowly and evenly.

John, thanks for the update and the advice. I don't know Bill personally, but obviously his health is more important than a banjo head.

My condolences to his family. Sorry to hear the news. On a side note, my order has been filled.
