Trying to install my new premounted vellum head from Miller's. I have an early 20s FBanks/Vega, and ordered the 10 15/16 head, which the receipt says I got. My problem is that, in order to get the hooks on, the flesh hoop has to be virtually flush with the tension band. The flesh hoop I got is larger than my tension band, so I can get a few hooks on, but then no shot on the other side or as I move around the head (tried both ways). The crown seems to be right, but the flesh hoop is the problem. Did they just mount with the wrong size hoop or is there some trick for making this work? Compared to the renaissance head I was replacing, same crown, hoop is about 1/8" larger on the hide. I posted in the building/set up forum and am re-posting here bc I can't figure out how to link

TX2AK says: 4/28/2012 4:13:03 AM Basically, the tension hoop fits over the top crown they formed, but the flesh hoop sticks out all the way around. I can squish it on one side, but that leaves 1/8, maybe more on the other side. When I started using quick clamps to try to make it work, the indentation was inside the flesh hoop - as in, the tension band was pressing into just the hide head, and no chance at getting the hooks on.
	jbalch says: 4/29/2012 7:16:49 AM It sounds like the flesh hoop is just a little too large. For a proper fit, the outside-diameter (o.d.) of the flesh hoop should be no larger than the o.d. of the tension hoop. Ideally it can be very slightly undersized (by approx. the thickness of the hide). That way the finished head will fit securely under the tension hoop. If the flesh hoop is too much smaller than the tension hoop ... it tends to slip underneath on the inside between the tension hoop and rim. If the flesh hoop is too large ... the problem is as you describe. The flesh hoop can interefere with the hooks. If you can get it installed...it will probably be fine. You might try bending a few of the hooks slightly so that they tilt toward the rim. That might help create clearance for the flesh hoop. Buy a few replacement hooks to bend if you don't want to damage the vintage originals. I don't think you will have this problem: but sometimes if the hoop is significantly too large, the crown of the hide might be cut by the inside edge of the tension hoop. When installing oversized head, I would inspect the inside bottom edge of the tension hoop to make sure it is not too sharp.

	John Gribble says: 4/29/2012 1:44:46 PM If the head and hoop are snug on the pot, then a smaller hoop wouldn't work. It is the thickness of the metal used to make the hoop which is the problem. You may need to send the head back in exchange for an unmounted head, then make yourself a thinner hoop out of a wire coathanger or something (you can tape the ends together) and learn to mount the head yourself.
