I have a relatively new banjo from Brooks, with a skin head. Yesterday, I noticed that it really sunk. So much so that it dropped about 1/2 note in tuning. That's because the humidity here in Tucson went from 5% to about 25%.
Today I removed the head, and gave it a good coating of oil-based wood stain, both sides. When it dries, I intend to spray it with some water-repellant shoe spray I found in the closet.
Another banjo head that I used that wood stain on has hardly changed at all. And that was just a light coat, which I wiped off quickly. See: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/237565
So I'm thinking that the combination of a heavy dose of the oil stain, plus a spray of water repellant might make this head resistant to humidity changes.
A nice side effect is that the wood stain really makes the skin look nice.
We'll see how it works.
