John Balch Goat skin Head on a Reiter Standard

From pluckyfingers on 9/7/2012 10:00:40 PM

Just installed one of John's coffee stained heads on my Reiter Standard and like wow!. I've had frosted and Ren heads on this banjo but this is by far the best sounding one so far. Full rich tone like I've never heard before from this banjo. For my first experience with a hide head it was easy as, and looks great to boot. Thanks John for your great heads and service.

I must be doing something wrong. I bought a John Balch head a few months ago and installed it on my Reiter Standard this evening. It may not have helped that I let it sit around dry Albuquerque for a few months. The action is way too low. I have tightened down the head, it did go on very easily, and switched to a taller bridge but something just is not right... no doubt it is me not the head.

I installed mine during the end of winter and at a very humid time in Melbourne. The head was always quite soft in the morning and the action really low. As the day warmed up the head stretched out more and tightened up with the action being higher. The head has now "settled down" more and seems more consistent in height and tension and I am finding that I am now loosening the tension a little to get the sound I prefer. Make sure you tighten the tension nuts diagonally opposite each other over the head, rather than going around the clock to achive a more even stretch over the rim. Good luck.

Safety Tip: When you replace the head make sure you don't leave the tonering in the old head.... Dohhh.

Never done that before, neat trick.
