Just installed a John Balch-mounted mottled calf-skin on a 12 inch Buckeye WL. Very impressed with John's work. Installed in about an hour. The crown height was almost perfect. No need to moisten the head. I replaced a Bill Miller head that I had installed on this banjo about 6 months ago. It was a beautiful bleached calfskin head but the crown height was very low and it took lots of swearing and some heavy clamping to get it just to the point where I could get the nuts secured. In the process, even after wetting, I managed to cause two small tears. Maybe more moistening could have helped but it was a bear to install. John's went on without superhuman effort. Both heads are superior quality, but the Balch head installed with less effort. Ask for a higher crown if you are worried about fit, but just remember heads are going to stretch for a while after you install them. Finally, there is no reason for anyone to be afraid of switching to skin. With these pre-mounts even someone like me can pitch the plastic without too much effort.
