Best hide head for a long neck ...

From shannonhearne on 11/5/2012 11:46:18 AM

Hello,

I would appreciate some input on your preference for the type of hide head for a long neck banjo. And, perhaps you might explain "why"  you prefer one over  another.

Currently I am using a Renaissance II head, and its not half bad.  But on some of my other banjos, I have changed out the Renaissance for a Balch Goat Skin head, and have been very pleased with result.

The long neck I am considering making the head change on has an 11 inch, 3 ply, 1/2 inch hard rock maple rim made by Mark Hickler, with a tubaphone tone ring and a heavy Kerschner tail piece. (So its loud and could stand to be "softened" a bit.)

In advance "Thanks" for your responses.

You've said that you want a softer sound then you're getting now. Softening could be achieved by: 1) loosening the head a bit or 2)using a thicker bridge or 3)???. If you're going to a skin, then a thicker skin will have a less brilliant sound then a thinner one. Alternately, you could adjust your touch and play more softly. Some players can vary their volume at will and some just have one level.

I would go with John's Stern Tannery calf skin head. That would be the closest to what the very earliest long necks wore , and bright enough for a myriad of styles but still smoother and a bit mellower than a ren. head.I have one on my Bart Reiter Regent which has a Whyte laydie tone ring and it's great!
