Bill Miller Calfskin

From Bill on 6/13/2013 5:07:57 PM

The Link here is to a photo of a Bill Miller white "standard" calfskin head that I just mounted on my Reiter pot.  I bought the skin from Bill 5 1/2 years ago.

I don't know how to attach a photo to this post.

I followed Bill's mounting instructions.

It's still wet.  I mounted it so that the stretcher band extends 3/8" above the surface of the head.  I hope that when it's dry and tight that the band will extend only 1/16"-1/8" high.

That's the hope...

If the stretcher band is too high when I'm done, can I re-wet the head and lower it?

It looks about as white as any skin could ever get. I like white skins, but I also like dyed ones - what looks best?Who can say? I have restretched loose skins before so I imagine your suggestion will work OK.

Yes. You don't want to get it very wet, just enought that it sags a little.

Thanks to both of you for the advice. It's drying nicely, 14 hours into the process. I'll leave it alone until this evening.

Looks like a great job - well done. How did it turn out?

It turned out well. I needn't have worried about the crown height. I took your advice from other postings and removed the head from the pot for trimming. Scissors are a lot less dangerous than trying to trim an installed head with a razor blade.
