Hi, I recently put a head on a non standard size banjo hoop and obviously had to set the crown myself. Alas the crown was about five millimetres out, or a little under a quarter of an inch skewed with the tension hoop fully tightened. Do I need to set the crown again? It doesn't sound bad but I'm just wondering if that skewed crown is stopping my banjo from sounding great. Also are there any risks for the banjo head or the banjo itself?

	jbalch says: 6/22/2013 7:04:37 AM A level tension hoop is desirable. It helps set an even tension all around for best sound. I think the hardware itself might possibly become distorted -over a long period of time - if it is poorly aligned. That is especially true of old brass parts. You might be able to - release the tension - and re-moisten the hide (Don't completely remove the head - just use the wash-cloth method illustrated in my photos linked at the right). Then gradually tighen EVENLY all around to set the crown in a better alignment. I hope that helps.

	Bufo Bill says: 6/22/2013 4:24:06 PM Got it sorted. In the end I didn't feel happy with stretching so I just got stuck in and straightened out the crown by repositioning the flesh hoop. The banjo sounds lovely, a lot better. Many thanks for your advice and for running such a good resource as this.
