I'm new to this group, although all of my banjos have skin/hide heads, mostly from John Balch.
I'd like to get your ideas on a question I have about tuning (strings and heads) versus humidity/temperature.
Suppose you had a hide head banjo with adjustable head tension that was "perfect" in sound, in-tune, head tightened to your preference.
Then some day later, you find all your strings are flat (or sharp, in the reverse case). Do you reckon it would be "better" to re-tune the strings, or tighten the head until the banjo itself is on tune. I'm assuming the change in pitch is due to humidity and maybe some temperature changes. This assumes well stretched stings not prone to "creep".
It sort of seems to me that if indeed the change is due to humidity, re-tuning the head might be preferable (within reason). Tackheads are, of course, limited here.
