I Gotta Thick Head!

From Gordy Ohliger on 7/11/2014 11:59:12 AM

OK, I have this gorgeous #9 which I saved, rebuilt, and had it up to speed, it played superbly! The original head finally split.

I chose a skin head out of my stash, and I can't for the life of me, fit the ring down on it. It's all original parts and it worked before!

What's the trick? Can I sand down the skin head at the edges? All the other heads I have, are just as thick or thicker.

I want my banjo back. Help!

Hi
I had a calfskin head that I mounted and it was too thick, tried to straighten the flat tension hooks, and it killed the sound. It was about .020 thick, sanded it down to a little less than .010. It works much better and its soft & fuzzy like suede on the inside.

Two things I've done in the past; clean and lightly sanded the inside of the tension, wax both the outside of the tone ring and the inside of the tension hoop with paraffin wax.

Thank you! Thank you!
The first real ideas I've heard on the subject. I guess just regular paraffin wax.

Bleaching goat skin..... Hi guys, I just got a whole lot of goat rawhide, and was wondering how to bleach it, or whiten it.
