Stern Tanning hides back-in-stock - FINALLY

From jbalch on 3/12/2015 2:12:14 PM

I've been waiting since November for an order of hides from Jeff.  They arrived this week.  See my blog here:  http://www.banjohangout.org/blog/33137

I have two of these in calfskin and can highly recommend them and especially John's excellent pre-mounting. Both of mine fit perfectly and were just the right head height to allow for tightening and a break-in stretch.

They are so smooth and even in thickness. This is what original top quality Rogers heads must have been like when new. Everyone has their own preference of course but if you're looking for a new "vintage" head it's well worth the extra cost.

Rich,

What was extra cost in recent history may now be the norm, at least for banjo players who desire a real hide head. I haven't yet asked John how much he wants for a skin suitable for a 12" pot, but can report having paid $106 for an 18" skin imported from Ireland (see banjohangout.org/photo/183545). It's 18" because I bought it from a percussion instrument supplier (professionalpercussionproducts...alfo.html) and it was the only suitable item. I am very happy with that skin, but considering the expense I intend to make it last until I die.

John, what are you asking for a skin to fit a 12" pot?

I am only selling these pre-mounted. I waited four months to get them and want to use them all for my customers who have patiently waited along with me. I received ten hides and five are already committed.

A 12" Stern Tanning head is $95 plus shipping. The whole price list is here: banjohangout.org/blog/32805
