I put one of John Balch's 11" premounted Stern Tanning heads on my Sullivan Festival. It sounds fantastic for Scruggs style bluegrass. The low D sounds better than any other banjo I have ever played. There is a depth to the tone that was definitely not there before. I feel like there's a little less brightness but the all-around tone is better to my ears and I can play closer to the bridge now which I really love. My beautiful Bales banjo, which cost me twice as much, has been virtually ignored since I put the head on so I guess I need another head to even the playing field. It also has a different very slick texture than I imagined and looks fantastic as far as color and shading.
