My hide does NOT like the direct sunshine!

From Tom Berghan on 4/3/2016 12:29:45 PM

Yesterday I was jamming with friends, sitting outside on a sunny afternoon. The sun was high in the sky and I could not seem to get away from the sun light hitting the hide. The result was that my strings were rapidly going sharp. I would no sooner tune up and start to play then by the middle of the tune I was intolerably out of tune!  After about 40 minutes I had to quit before I my hide head popped.  I could not stay in tune. The hide was tightening very quickly.  I have played hide for years now but never experienced this. I guess I don't sit out in the direct sun too often! But if I do in the future, I won't be taking a hide head out. Note to self: don't sit directly in the sun. I don't think there is a cure for this issue.

Well, if it's any consolation, the sun's not good for your skin either.

Good point Cliff. Personally, I burn easily. I will keep to shade just as you advise!!!

The factor that I discovered this winter is that temperature has a big effect. At an open mic I stepped outside to tune and "warm up". With in literally seconds my strings had gone sharp by a whole tone and the head had gotten very bright (high frequency resonances), i.e., tight. Going back inside cured problem within several minutes, but I won't do that again.
