John or anybody else, I have been using hide heads on two Mastertone type banjos for Scruggs picking. One for 6 months and the other for about a year. I have never treated them with any kind of waterproof spray or silicone.
What are the reasons to do it and what are the reasons not to do it? I live in the fairly dry climate of Colorado. I read some old posts that said beware of getting silicone spray on wood or nickel but I assume if I took a head off a banjo that had been stretching for awhile I could spray it on and let it dry before putting it back on. What is the recommended type of silicone or waterproof and any general tips for applying it? Thanks in advance.
