I took banjo lessons from Johnnie when he and June lived in an old farmhouse in Ashburn, VA back in the late 70s. I played bass fiddle on several gigs with Johnnie, June and Vern Bryant on fiddle. There was a youtube video recording of a gig we did at the Lucketts, VA schoolhouse around 1980, but it's no longer there. I really admired that beautiful banjo Johnnie had made and how he used those "cheaters". He was a real character and a mighty fine musician.
