Banjo n00b

From Jim_Thomas on 12/20/2011 5:23:40 PM

I just got my first banjo. It's just a beginner Gold Tone, but to tell you the truth, it's probably better than most intermediate banjos XD

Anyways, I just learned Boiled Em' Cabbage Down and Cripple Creek. I can blunder through "my own versions" of Foggy Mountain Breakdown and Ballad of Jed Clampett. This is not day 4 of playing banjo.

So once I can play the old standards, I will start learning some less obvious songs.

I'm trying to learn "Rocky Top", but I think I should try something else because the chord changes are too fast for me at this time. hmmm I'm using bluegrass scruggs style. My first was clawhammer but it was too boring for my taste.

speaking as a "experienced" beginner (LOL), I suggest some foundation songs such as Boil Them Cabbage Down, Cripple Creek & Banjo in the Hollow. These three will give you the basics. FMB is a fast song to play, but can be done (at least the down the part). Rocky Top may be a challenge because of the strange chords it has. May wish to hold off on that one for a bit. I too struggled for a VERY long time attempting to play by tab and DVD. Having absolutely no music in my background, made the endeavor VERY frustrating. I was at my wits end. Find a banjo teacher. There is no substitute. If there is no teacher in your area, find a DVD teacher that suits your style of learning. Everyone's approach is a little different. They all have the same goal. Being able to play without tab. I purchased the Murphy Method DVD's and went to her beginners camp. AMAZING! Her method is working for me (plus I take in person lessons with her now). I guess what I am trying to say is, learn correctly. Unlearning something SUCKS and is VERY difficult to do (at least it was for me). Regardless of the path you choose, have fun with it and enjoy the journey. I wish you great success and happy picking.
