Since Thanksgiving what have you learned?

From prairiemik on 1/16/2012 12:49:36 PM

Beginning to wonder if anyone else was practicing banjo. Not to many comments posted. So, How about if every member of this group report in on their accomplishments and give one another a little pep talk!  I will start:  I am still very slow 100 bpm or less on a song. Lots of mistakes, but my teacher said I was making clear notes with good timing. Songs I am  learning are: Good night ladies, Tom Dooley, Boil that Cabbage, Sourwood Mountain and Two dollar bill. These are all short beginner tunes and I have yet  to play any of them perfect.

How are you doing?

Since t-day, i've really committed to learning how to play. i try and practice at least a little bit every day and started taking lessons, if only every couple weeks/once a month. i've also decided to focus mostly on frailing as it appeals to me a bit more then Scruggs/Bluegrass.
as for songs, i've gotten RSB's Cripple Creak memorized and just need to keep working on accuracy and speed. and my teacher gave me Sourwood Mountain which i've gotten mostly memorized and of course need to work on accuracy and speed. my teacher also gave me his version of Cripple Creak and that one is a bit more challenging then RSB's but it's coming along. none of these include the lyrics btw. one step at a time.

I have gotten "Banjo in the Hollow", "Cripple Creek", and "Boil them Cabbage". I'm working on the high break for Boil them Cabbage. I've only had one lesson but I'm using the Murphy Method so it working well. Still trying to get an hour or so a day practicing. I've got Banjo in the Hollow and Cripple Creek up to speed /time and they sound decent. Only a few hick-ups once in a while. I've actually been combining the two songs to make it interesting. Its slow but steady. The wife was getting a bit snappy when I was playing, and she said "Your supposed to play it for a month and loose interest, not keep playing and playing the same song a hundred times." Oops I seem to have skipped the "I give up" part in my banjo for dummies book. She apologized a few days later. Now if I could only loose weight playing the banjo then it would be a win win situation.

Happy New Years everyone.

I have been practicing Cripple Creek using Rob Bourassa's Youtube lessions, I've made it up to his 12th lesson part so far, the speed thing is hard to master but I am getting better. When that gets "old" I mess around with Rob's Foggy Mountain Breakdown lesson and I'm just starting his Man of Constant Sorrow lessons. I try to play a little bit every day but probably average 5 of 7 days a week where I play at least half an hour. However we just got decent snow around here so I have been spending banjo time cross country skiing instead. That gives my wife a break too!

I have leaned Banjo in the Hollow and I'm working on Cripple Creek. I got a banjo for Christmas and have been practicing daily. I'm having a blast while at the same time learning patients. I don't have an instructor locally, and I'm using the Murphy Method. I practice my rolls and chords on my own for about 15 minutes, and then start in on the actual music/songs for about 30 min to an hour when I can.
