well ive hit a new low .it seems that the blue grass association i belong to is as they put it "restructure the system" they will devide the group up into more groups than before , they offer a beginner workshop that really is for the better players, and the person leading the beginners is focused on his ability to play rather than help someone like me.. very slow.. ive mention this to the group and was brushed off..now im debating if im still interested in the banjo anymore .. im disillusioned as to ge4tting tips and help by "people who care and want to help which is a lie.. im open for discussion ,, convince me to stick with it ..

stick with it on your own or find a teacher for lessons. maybe find an informal jam somewhere else. if the environment isn't helping you, then change your environment. i started playing with a book on my own till i got some lessons for x-mas. i can't afford to go every week or even 2 weeks, but am trying to go every 3rd week or at least once a month. my progress really improved a lot from just a couple of lessons. just remember to keep having fun with it.

I agree with Diablito. If they are not willing to be honest and meet up to what they said they would do and "assist beginners", then move on to some one(s) who will. Try a few lessons, who knows you may meet another student who is wanting to jam together. I wouldn't give up the banjo just because those folks treated you poorly. If anything that would drive me to work harder and prove that I could play better than they do. In the end you need to decide if you really want to have fun and learn to play the banjo. I know as we all do that the banjo is one of harder instruments to learn. I picked up the guitar and was an intermediate player in about 8 months. Not so with the banjo. But I can easily say I love to play the banjo and I'm in it for the long haul. In the end its what your heart will tell you to do. If its not with the banjo than maybe another type of instrument (Guitar, mandolin, etc.) This way your still in scene that you enjoy. Like I said before you already know in your heart what you want to do. And always trust your heart.

I have been learning for 8 months now and have had an instructor right along the way, but, I have made more advancement and understand more since joining the pickers academy, talking in chatroom to other learners and they are all new learners on the site, haven't run across any experts yet, but new learners are fresh, excited and better able to communicate at the level I'm on. Theres always someone just behind or just in front with their learning to show you something, the lessons are broken down into easy sections and I've found Glenn is more than willing to help and advise. He gets a great kick out of helping beginners. I did a workshop the other day in which I learnt what I had already been taught, but didn't understand why I had been taught that way, now I know. I figure I have virtually wasted eight months, now weather it is because of the teacher I had or if I wasn't yet ready to understand I don't know, what I do know is I'm happier with my progress and I now understand why something is done the way it is. Give it a shot, doesn't cost to look and the guys there are as friendly as.

Their is a member fee, depending on what you want to view. Their is a free version. I'm not a member but I've seen the site. Just google "pickers academy" and it should be the first site listed.

Don't let anyone control your desire to play. There are plenty more folks willing to share their love for the banjo. Someone who truly loves the banjo and the music are folks who want to share that love. Keep pickin all good things come in time.
