While I'm here I have a question about fifth string tuning pegs on left handed banjos. Being a relative beginner I have only held and played one lefty (the one I own) a "Zeppified" Deering Goodtime. The Chanterelle advertised has a fifth string peg that appears to be interchangeable with a right handed banjo whereas my Deering lefty is using a "right handed" fifth string tuning peg and contorts it into the neck so that while it technically works seems to be abnormal. Sorry for the long way of asking what does your fifth string tuning peg look like?

You are totally right on the one other trucker! As cool as it is that many custom and mass manufactured banjo makers so nicely offer Left handed models, most times they just put a right handed 5th string tuner and put it in there backwards, and it causes the 5 string to have a bit of an odd able to it. Not Warren Yates however, He is a perfectionist! He made sure he modified my 5th string tuner to be the right direction on my Left Skillet head. Looks they way a banjo should look. He showed me how, so I did it to my other banjos.
I can tell you how to do it if you send me PM and I would be happy to call you and explain it. You have to do some minor modifications to a Schaller tuner, basically pulling it apart cutting and additional groove in it and reversing it. But worth the effort it looks traditional and great
Your other option is to go with a Waverly Planetary tuner that is universal for both righty and lefty, but some folks complain that those are hard to change strings on, and I think they don't look quite traditional.
So on my Yates, I have Waverly tuners on the headstock and a modified schaller tuner for the fifth.

So it faces the way you would think for a Lefty banjo -a mirror image of the righty and looks a functions correctly that way. I have a Deering and a Gold Tone that the 5th string tuners originally looked the way you describe. I changed them both out with Schallers modified using Warrens method to face the right way for a Left Handed banjo

I have a lefty Gibson that came with a left handed geared 5th string tuner. It is probably a converted righty tuner. Richie Dotson acousticbox.com/howto.html used to have the instructions to convert a tuner but I can't locate it now. I also have a banjo with the Waverly tuner. What a pain! Takes a bit longer to change a string. If you get in a rush to change a string like during a gig you could leave a piece of string in the tuner spend time picking in out. Maybe Richie would convert one for you for a price.

Basically, to reverse the Schaller, you punch out the two pins, the one on the face and then the one laterally through the splines on the cone that go into the neck, then it all comes apart nicely. A tack hammer and a small nail work nicely for that. You have to cut a new groove in the peg part since you are reversing it from what it was so it can lock in their reversed in the new direction and position

To cut it I put the inside tuner part in a drill press and cut the groove with a hack saw resting the hacksaw blade up against the drill press chuck - work like a charm! you could probably do it with a drill too
