I make noises that if I’m not careful might be considered music. Does that count? I read a couple of your blogs & can’t say that I’m even in the same league of seriousness. I play for my enjoyment and nothing more. I don’t spend much time looking at tabs or videos I just figure out songs by ear. You mentioned Elderly in one of your comments that’s a good source for happenings. If you’re on Facebook you might search for the Pretty Shaky String Band, they gather regularly in the Lansing area. You might also enjoy Bob’s Barn in Lake Odessa. If you’re in the Lansing area you’d probably enjoy Folkgrass at the Woldumar Nature Center on October 15th. You can find everything I mentioned on Facebook and follow them for updates. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the posting. I am still trying to learn how to play the banjo clawhammer style. However, until mid December, I am in Australia on sabbatical. Gave up trying to find a clawhammer banjo teacher here. The banjos that I have seen for sale here are overpriced and not what I consider to be acceptable (e.g., Deering Goodtime or Gretsch). So, I practice at night on pieces. Looking forward to getting back to Michigan and to getting back to instruction.

When I picked up the banjo I was (& still remain) primarily interested in playing/singing folk. By folk I mean Pete Seeger & Woodie Guthrie kind of music, not so much mountain music that you might see a lot of videos on with a lot of melodic complicated styles of drop and double thumbing. I prefer simple songs that everyone can sing along with over instrumentals. I bought several instructional books and watched quite a few videos. What I found most helpful was Wayne Erbsen’s Clawhammer for the complete ignoramous and Patrick Costello’s The how Tao of Old Time Banjo. Patrick used to have a lot of videos on YouTube but I think he requires a membership now. I like his attitude but not enough to join. If you do hook up with the Pretty Shakys I’d mention that Mike Ross plays with them and is a reputable teacher for several instruments. I’d take lessons from either him or Neil Woodward but I’m a truck driver and cannot keep anything resembling a schedule and I’m rarely home during the week. Most instructors only teach weekdays.

You may also check out the Detroit Square Dance Society FB page, if you're near SE MI. There are often a lot of old time players in attendance and the band is stellar.

I was hoping for some jamming in West MI near Stanton. I have never even been to observe a jam at this point. I am working on learning rhythm and chords to get me going.
