Wide Neck MM

Hi. New player with a used Kay clone identified as East German made. Getting frustrated with the narrow neck. Saw a Morgan Monroe wide neck (MWN-B1) with a 1 3/8" nut width. Mine I think measured is about 1 1/8. What is the feedback on this brand? Anyone have the wide neck? I really want to play however right now I am blaming the banjo :) It is really nice looking and sounds great, and it will be a keeper, however,,,,,,,, Thanks for any help. Marty

I felt the same way when I started. I have since found practice is a big factor. I think every new player has a hard time with the necks, but it does get better. I replied to you post as well, good luck.

My first banjo had a narrow neck and the neck on the MM MNB-1 (just has a narrower neck than the one you're looking at, I believe) was much easier to play on. My fingers seemed to fit better and as a result, I became less frustrated. I am sure that if I had kept on with my old banjo, I would have progressed, but it was also a cheap model I bought some 40+ years back and really didn't have that sound I was looking for.
I love my Morgan Monroe and the way it sounds. I think that for the money, it is the best sounding beginner banjo out there. I can't tell you how many people have commented on it's sweet tone and nice appearance.
If you have decided to buy a new banjo, and it sounds like you have, then MM is an excellent choice. The wider neck should make it even easier to learn on. Bottom line, it might give you reason to play/practice more often. It won't play itself and won't make you a good player unless you put the time in! Have fun!

Thanks for your comments. I agree that play/practice is the key. For the $, the MM appear to have a very nice, full look to them. I like the darker, looking wood versus a lighter. As with any instrument, the shops, etc do not have large inventories on hand, so to actually pick one up to try is always the challenge. Again. Appreciate this Groups comments.
