I have just finish learning Black Mtn Rag inspired by young Nikki from the Pickin Chick's. (check out her video on YouTube) Today I am planning to start work on Murphy's More Advanced Earl DVD. I don't have D Tuners but there are a number of signature Scruggs lick's I want to learn. It's probably way beyond my current skill level but I like the challenge and I believe it's important to try things outside your comfort zone.

ok, I've got BlackBerry Blossom and Turkey in the Straw up to a reasonable speed.
Now I'm gonna bite the bullet and learn some fancy back-up. I've been putting it off far too long, and like Earl said, "you play back-up 90% of the time so you might as well be good at it". (or something like that)
I think Casey looks really good in this Video, no disrespect or anything but she's smiling good and I'm just saying it's a good video of her. Keith.

Slight change of plan.. I put the DVD in the slot and got distracted. So this past week I've been reviewing the Ralph Stanley DVD and Fancy Back-Up. I have got Clinch Mtn Backstep in the bag and up to speed. But I havn't quite mastered that fancy ending lick. Big thanks to Steve over on the MM Forum for helping me out with the ending.

Fancy Back-Up is one of my favorite DVDs.. I just wished there was a whole lot more. If you haven't tried this one guy's you really must add this to your collection. This DVD really sheds light on many of Earls classic Back-Up Lick's and more importantly how to put them together to create some really tasteful back-up. I know the MM has it's critics here on the BHO but I am pretty darn sure if they sat down with this instructional DVD they might just have to eat some humble pie.

Keith I am impressed to hear you've got BlackBerry Blossom in the bag. I struggle with that long reach with the index on the second fret and pinky on the fifth. My fingers are quite short but I know I will nail it one day.

Tam, thanks for your post. That "Beyond Vamping - Fancy Banjo Backup" DVD is really excellent, and it's unique as far as I know-- no one else teaches anything like it, by ear. But Casey figured out how to do it!

Hi Red.. I have a huge stack of instructional DVD's several on the subject of Back_Up and I can confirm that Casey's work on Fancy Banjo Back_Up is by far THE best instructional video I have no question about it.
