Old Joe Clark - that so and so

From KYSLOWFINGERS on 12/28/2011 10:41:27 AM

Finally and I do mean finally got this song down. I had skipped over this song on vol 2. I couldn't get it for some reason. No problem with the OJC lick. I just had trouble getting all the parts in the right place, too much repetition I guess. But by George I finally got it.

Good job. That tune, as "simple" as it may seem when sung, is a real challenge on the banjo.

I'm still working on the correct timing on this one. It's one that I can fly thru, but that's the problem I run away from the tempo! So, I empathize with you, it was tricky at first, was leaving a note out, now it's tricky cause I play it too fast most of the time.

That was my problem, tkocason, You get it down and then you over run it. Mechanically not really too hard, but timing wise and getting it together as advertised was my problem. Thank you Red for your kind words.

And also this was not a tune I knew by heart and this could have hurt me. Songs I know by heart I seem to learn a lot quicker.

Well-put! That's one of Murphy's big points: you have to know how a tune goes before you can play it correctly! -- this is why she says, "Listen, listen, listen, and play, play, play."

I have been through Beginning Banjo 1 and Misfits. Old Joe Clark has given me the most trouble by far. I was looking for a thread on this one and it sounds like I have the same issue...timing. Sometimes it is hard to pick up the emphasis on certain notes learning at "teaching speed" and then actually playing the tune properly. It is coming along, but painfully slow!

Thanks for the comment bucksnort2000. I don't post on here often, but just wanted to tell you to keep at it. It's amazing what time/practice will do. I used to try a new chord/technique and think "I'll never be able to do that", but now I know to just keep trying. And still mess up often, but that's half the fun.
