Well I'm thoroughly impressed with the Murphy Method. I've only been at it 3 weeks but find this method of learning fun and with results. So after Banjo in the Hollow and Cripple Creek I'm on to Boil them Cabbage Down. This is the recommended progression I'm told. And alas, there is chord vamping. My fingers are in a knot and refuse to work. Should I be vamping this soon? Anyone else experience this? Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Biggest problem I have in vamping is staying on the "off beat". I trust in the progression Murphey suggests. Big fun though!

Bob, It's great to start vamping so soon, but it is hard. It just takes a long time for your fingers to get used to making those chords. Keep at it and it will come (slowly!!)

I think it's wonderful that you're practicing vamping. It took a whole lot of practice, but I found that vamping REALLY helped me smooth out my chord changes around the fretboard - even when playing melodies.
Vamping is also a nice gateway to jam sessions!

The song really comes together when you start to learn how to vamp. You really get a feel for Bluegrass music and it helps your timing.

Thanks all for your positive comments...Angie did I say vamping? My attempts sound more like cramping! But then 3 weeks ago I didn't know the difference between a square roll and a spring roll...and now I can play one. So Casey your point is well taken...practice, keep at it...and it will eventually come. Boy this is fun! Thx!

Murphy method is a wonderful way to learn the banjo. I've been at it for several years. My teacher here in Tucson, "Just Bill"on BHO, plays songs for me slowly, I record it, and work on it at home. I do tab it out for myself because it helps w/my memory, but i don't learn song off of tab. Chuncking helps you learn rhythm and chords and gets you around the banjo. And pay attention to the different licks. you'll use them in a ton of other songs. Keep at it, It will pay off.

I had the same problem and I play the guitar. The banjo is a different kinda beast for me. But once I practiced for a few days it got better. I'm only a couple songs ahead of you, so I feel your pain. But I still play each song everyday to keep up the different skills. My main problem with vamping is being on the off beat. Feels funny.

Eureka! I am determined to get this down...imagine my (pleasant) surprise when I realized I was trying to put my little finger on the 5th string instead of the 4th string. Sure makes a difference using the 4th string. Guess I'll need to play closer attention to my Murphy Methods.

Hello, I just wanted to chime in and say that I just started The Murphy Method yesterday. I am so excited with the program. I have no idea of what I am doing but am learning faster than I thought. I can play Banjo in the Hollow very slowly a couple times through with a few mistakes. Prior I could never do that! I don't feel like a robot looking at tab. For me it's a wonderful program.
