Hi, I just started working on Cumberland Gap, part B tonight. I think this will be my most challenging part so far. For me the pinky placement is quite tough. I can't reach the 11th fret at all (yet) and even on the 10th fret I manage to touch the 1st and 2nd string at the same time.

Yes, that pinky is the hardest thing you've had to do so far, by a long shot! It probably won't come easily or fast, but keep at it and you'll get it eventually. The 10th fret sounds just fine, by the way, so stick with that for a while!

Keep at it and take your time. It is a really important tune to learning to play up the neck and it is fun to play. Everything really good takes time to learn so take your time.

I've been there, like you I posted on the Hangout about it. I think it went something like "well this ends my banjo career, because there's no way I will ever be able to do this". And looking back on it, that's still one of the most challenging left hand skills to do. I'm still having trouble with a perfect D and F shape but the pinky goes with the flow on those. I remember telling my pinky to do all this stuff while the rest of the fingers just sat there, it wasn't happy. But it will get better, hang in there.

Hi Dave,
Your question is exactly the same one I had with this tune.
Suggestion: When you have finished each practice session with Cumberland Gap, make a point of adding a minute or two, and just run thru those few notes around (and including) the 12th fret note over and over for those few minutes. I tried this, and after the 1st few tries I was thinking " Why am I doing this?", and then after a few more sessions I found out why,; it really helped.
Give it a shot.

Once you get Cumberland Gap under fingers it'll most likely becomne one of your warming up tunes. It's a good one!

It may be a challenge to but it is not the hardest thing you will encounter. Think of it as a stepping stone to playing up the neck. It may take some time to perfect but the more you practice the easier it gets. Like preparing to run the marathon you need to tone up the pinky muscles. Practice the lick frequently in short spells at first as you get more flexibility of movement increase your practice time.. Well done your on your way.

I just started Cumberland Gap & I can't even force my pinky to the 11th fret by grabbing it & twisting it over there with my right hand!!! This may not be impossible; but, I do expect it to take awhile... Patience has temporarily escaped me...
