Just Started

From Patanio on 5/5/2012 3:22:25 PM

Just started!  This is great. She goes slow enough and starts with a great sounding song. I love the idea of not using tab, I had enough trouble with guitar and mandolin!  I think this is really going to work!

It is going to work just fine Patanio, probably better than you ever imagined. Let me please, if you will, tell you what will make it better. Make certain not to skip around with her video's. Start with Vol. I - then work with misfits, then move on to Vol. II. I'm just a tad bit short of a year with Murphy and my banjo now. I skipped misfit's, wish I had not done that. I am having a blast with misfits now though, lot of fun. Enjoy!

Do you recommend getting each song down before going to the next? I am eager, but don't want to mess up.

I started around 4 weeks ago. Absolutely love the Murphy Method! I don't know why but it works for me so much better. I struggled with tab, which I may need to get over at dome point, but not for now.

I'd much rather watch, listen and apply instead of read and apply.

I am working on 3rd song Cumberland Gap and it's coming along nicely. However I will check the misfits DVD out too, thanks!

I do recommend getting each of her songs down pretty clean Patanio. I'm not 100% certain, but I think she recommends misfits before Vol II. I was fortunate enough to attend one of her workshops in Portland about four months ago and that experiance was super. Because of my desire to learn quick songs I skipped around with her and Casey's videos although it was suggested I not do that. It still was fun don't get me wrong, and I learned some stuff, but now a year later I find myself right back starting all over from the start, and this is where I'm having the most fun and really feel confident I'm learning the method the way she intended it to be learnt. Good-Luck with it and keep us posted with your progress.

somarmd, Cumberland Gap is such a blast once you get to where you can play along with her and the guitar. Her smile while she plays just makes you that much more happier also! Never really thought I would get pinky to the 11th fret, but it just started going there one day, amazing how that works when you keep at it! Enjoy. :-)

Patinio,
Here's a link with the ideal order Murphy recommends doing the songs: blog.murphymethod.com/2008/10/...jo-track/

And here's one about how fast to move through the lessons: blog.murphymethod.com/2008/08/...-lessons/

Hope these help!
Casey

I've been working in the order that Casey mentioned and you do skip around some but its a ton of fun. I agree with Peanutscream, and Casey, get the songs right a clean before moving to the next (about 1 month.)

Yep. Practice, TMM way, makes perfect. Just find the time.

I didn't follow the list as such, (there wasn't a list when I started) I worked through the lessons as they are on the Beginner 1 & 2 then I think I touched on the Misfits Video but I started to feel that the tunes/licks all sounded to much alike and I started to loose focus so I moved onto Jam Session Standards and some of the other DVDs until I hit those magic words from Murphy.. "You need to go back to the Misfits Video"... So there are key lessons in various videos not just the Misfits Video that you need to learn, whilst it's wise to follow Murphy and Casey's advice it wont harm you if you stray off course a little. It's all good stuff.. Enjoy.
