Milestone - an Intermediate Song on Slow Jam DVD

From Delaware on 10/17/2012 10:54:13 AM

Since I am a new banjo player, I am following Murphy's recommended order for learning songs.  I am up to Two Dollar Bill.  Once I thought I had the mechanics down (the lead, the vamp and the transitions), I put in the slow jam DVD to try it out.

I notice that Two Dollar Bill is in the Intermediate section on the DVD.  BIG GRIN.  Another milestone - - an intermediate song!

Even if it doesn't really mean anything, being able to keep up with the DVD certainly made me feel good.  I thought I'd share to see if others would like to discuss milestones they have achieved while working through The Murphy Method.

Hi that's great! I made the mistake of not spending time on the vamp. I have learned 4 songs without the vamp so now I'm going back to learn with it.

I decided yesterday to just concentrate on Banjo. I have been so excited learning and loving bluegrass that I purchased a mandolin and have learned a few songs, murphy method of course. It's fun but I like the banjo better.

I do have a non-playing milestone. After much reading and discussion I purchased my first (maybe only) upgrade banjo. So as of yesterday I have been getting a feel for my Nechville Classic DLX.

Does that count?? :)

Dave;
That counts in a BIG way! Congratulations - I know how exciting a new addition to the musical family can be.

Good luck with the vamping. Once you pick it up, you may find how much fun it is to play along with jam DVDs, switching between the lead and backup. I have a blast with it. One of these days, I look forward to jamming with 3-dimensional people! (That is one of my "target" milestones).

Keep up the good work and come to the intermediate banjo camp in March. You will have fun.

That's my goal as well Delaware to play with others, so I guess vamping is a must.

I attended my first two bluegrass festivals this year and I have to tell it it's a must do.

I'm going to attend a local club ABL (Adirondack Bluegrass League) in my area this Sunday to push me to learn how to play with others. I'm nervous but have to jump in the water to get swimming so to speak....:)

mebacon - where is the intermediate banjo camp in March? I DOUBT that I will be ready . . . it was a bit of a challenge to play along with 1 intermediate song so far. But someday, who knows!

somarmd - Way to Go! Let me know how your "swim" goes.

The beginners camp is happening soon, I think at the end of this month. It is in Winchester with Murphy and Casey. The last I read, they still had spots. Call Murphy and ask. Contact info is on their website. You will have fun and you will learn a ton about pickin the banjo.

Thanks for info. I did see that but too far away for me. I'm in upstate NY, not far from Saratoga Springs. I will be looking in the future though....:)

I hope the camps are working out for you. Good luck and the milestones just happen. Congratulations on all those.
