Out of a handful of instruments I can play, the banjo was the only one I couldn't play by ear. And now, after 30 years, two banjos, and an armload of music books later, I still can't play the banjo by ear. Reading sheet music only serves to slow me down. I never could multitask.
For nearly a year, I kept running into recommendations about the Murphy Method which led me to this group, a few days ago. After enough hemming 'n hawing over the glowing testimonials and looking for excuses, I noticed that out of the hundreds of comments regarding the Murphy Method, only one was negative. Being a small business owner, I can testify that's a helluva good track record.
On Friday evening, I ordered four DVDs and included a question about their products. I received a response from Red, about 36 hours later, on a weekend. That's the same personal touch I incorporate into my company.
Of course, with my senility, when the DVDs finally arrive at the North Pole, I'll have completely forgotten why I ordered them. So, y'all will have to poke me with a reminder, in a week or so.
If you're lurking and fence-sitting about the Murphy Method, all I can say is 1) I did the homework for you and 2) you've run out of excuses.
As for the question I had asked, it was in regards to which DVDs I should purchase, next. I had purchase the top four on their web site. You might find Red's response, useful, which was:
If you'd like to pursue more complicated banjo instrumentals, the Advanced Earl, Great Banjo Tunes, and More Advanced Earl would be the way to go.
If you'd like to learn to improvise, then Improvising: The First Stage and High Breaks and Backup would be good.
If you'd like to learn more about playing in a group, then Vamping: Backup for Beginners and Beyond Vamping are good ways to go. Our Slow Jam and Picking Up the Pace DVDs are excellent jam DVDs to play along with, if you need the material played slowly at first.
If you'd just like to play more songs and tunes on the banjo, then Jam Session Standards, Amazing Grace Gospel Banjo, and Wildwood Flower are great for that.
Pete
P.S. What? No welcome to the group? Geez. What a bunch of misfits.
