After learning to play banjo from other resources for a little over two years, I felt that I was stalled and not playing and hearing the tunes I learned from tab correctly. I did learn a lot of basics. I decided to try the Murphy Method and learn using my ears without tab and bought the Beginning Banjo Volumes 1&2, along with Banjo Misfits. I'm now going into the third week using Murphy's Beginning Banjo Track. What a great feeling that I am moving forward again, my ear is getting better, learning new licks, and improving techniques. I like Murphy's teaching style and enjoying the learning progress again. Following Murphy's advice to practice the new tune for a month without moving on is going to be tough, I'm going to stick with it so the muscle memory is there and the tune can be played with only an occasional mistake. Keep picking.

	five-string fever says: 2/9/2014 6:49:34 AM Sounds like you are on the right track. I went through BB1 a couple of years ago and the first couple of songs on BB2. I got away from watching and learning from Murphy Method but still practiced what I knew, went to picks and practiced with a metronome, went to banjo camps, etc.... Recently I started going through BB1 and BB2 again and I am very pleased to find out I can play all of BB1 with Murphy at speed. I have a hard time playing all the notes for Old Joe Clark at her fastest pace but Salt Creek is not a problem. So now I am finishing off BB2 and starting on Jam Favorites because I can feel the progress much more than any other bluegrass banjo teaching method. When I play tab it seems to take he musicality out of it and I never remember how to play without the paper in front of me. I have been a musician for a years before I took up banjo but this seems to be the best way for me to accurately learn good arrangements for bluegrass banjo and I wish I had never slacked up on going through Murphy Method DVD's. By the way I really prefer doing the instant downloads on my computer because it is so easy to repeat sections without a bunch of fast-forwarding and rewinding (just click the mouse on the timeline where you want to go back to) and I can take it with me from room to room in my house. I did have to by an external speaker for my laptop to make it loud enough.

	the Twanger says: 4/7/2014 1:40:04 PM I read with interest the post by pickn5 and would like to add my ten penny worth. I have been using tab four approximately 4 years. I have been having issues with Grandfather's clock and could not get the timing or syncopation right. An offer came up on banjo hangout for the tune along with Scotland the Brave by Casey Henry using the Murphy method. I got the DVD and was very pleasantly surprised as to how quickly I was able to pick up the tune and be able to play along with Casey. I am now just beginning to start Scotland the brave but I am very impressed with this method of teaching and am a convert to this method.
